Consumer pressure forces Topman to pull T-shirts endorsing domestic violence

British clothing line Topman Design has taken two T-shirts out of production following a public outcry that claims they endorse and promote domestic abuse and sexism.

Consumers condemned one of the T-shirts for showing a list of excuses that could be used as justification for hitting women.
Buyers said “Promoting the excuses that men use to get away with abusing women is clearly wrong, whether it’s on a T-shirt or not.”

“Many woman and children flee for their lives every year from domestic violence. It’s very poor taste to promote it,” said another.

The other T-shirt displayed the slogan “Nice new girlfriend. What breed is she?” Inferring she was a type of dog that could be owned.

Topman responded by removing the offending T-shirts from sale.

“We have received some negative feedback regarding two of our printed T-shirts,” a statement Topman said.
The statement continued “… Whilst we would like to stress that these T-shirts were meant to be light-hearted and carried no serious meaning we have made the decision to remove these from the store and online as soon as possible.”

It seems that every time a designer doesn’t get away with slogans and images on the clothing that sexualise, degrade or commodify women, they resort to the same old line; yes we were naughty but it was only supposed to be a bit of fun and not taken seriously.

The clothing industry needs to be sent a clear message that domestic violence is anything but a bit of fun or something that should be joked about.

    About time some of these companies were made accountable! Well done!! I also can’t stand those t-shirts with naked/topless women on them, worn by young men in shopping malls, for all the little (and not so little) kids to see! Isn’t THAT a form of pornograghy??

    Maybe if there was a decent enough penalty (try in the $100 000 -500 000 range) some of these so called responsible companies might even try thinking before they offer this garbage as a product.

    This is an example of an appropriate outcome of responsible consumer pressure, but it’s inappropriate that consumers have to battle this sort of thing in the first place. “Light-hearted”? “No serious meaning”? Topman really doesn’t get it: THAT attitude is the PROBLEM!

    It’s no wonder we are seeing an increase in the lack of respect for girls/women from some of our young males today. These companies, with their excuses of it being lighthearted and not meant to be taken seriously – are you kidding! It might have got them the publicity they so wanted but – and I totally agree with Jim – we should be fining them enough money to make them think twice before they put other inappropriate things on their clothing.
