Impact of music videos on men’s body image and mood

Buff blokes in music videos are giving Australian men a complex, according to new research that has found exposure to video clips of attractive and muscular singers can make men feel less satisfied with their own bodies.

Dr Kate Mulgrew of the University of the Sunshine Coast, says the work, published in the journal Body Image, is the first study to focus on male body image and mood in relation to music video clips.

Mulgrew says body image disturbance is no longer a female-only problem with research showing a "substantial" number of men want to decrease body fat and increase muscle mass by as much as 13 kilograms.

She says while there has been significant research into the impact of media generally on body image, music video clips have had limited analysis.
