Plenary Topic – Summaries
Cyberbullying, Cyber-harassment & Sexting
Presented by Susan McLean
Cyberbullying and Sexting or sending a ‘sexy text’, are serious issues confronting schools and other areas of the community who deal with young people. Whilst cyberbullying is always a criminal offence in every state and territory in Australia and ‘sexting’ when it involves people under the age of 18 years is also a serious criminal offence, many people lack knowledge about how and when to involve law enforcement. This informative session will look at the criminality of cyberbullying and ‘sexting’ and include information about when Police must be informed, who can make the complaint and how to do this correctly.

Online Predators & Grooming
Presented by Detective Sergeant Stuart Butler
Internet Predators spend a considerable amount of time honing and fine tuning their skills on grooming children.
When Police restrict offender behaviour through education or from conducting online undercover stings, predators tend to adapt to the situation and find other ways to target their prey.
In some cases, predators do not have to try too hard to get children to do what they want, as the presence of willing child participants becomes a problem for Police.
Hear case studies of real life police investigations involving concerning behaviour from both the predator and the child.
See what you can do to stop Online Predators from preying on our children.
Assisting Parents & Teaching Kids to Manage Their Online Behaviour

Teachers will learn how address risky online behaviour. The session will focus on the 6 cyber hazards and how this impacts a student’s wellbeing at school and at home. Sex differences in cyber risks will be noted so that teachers can address the specific needs of each gender when working with young people. eSmart Program Overview
Presented by Jeremy Blackman
A holistic approach is required to create behaviour change. There are many lessons to be learned from well-known behaviour change models such as QUIT smoking, SunSmart and Work Safe initiatives. As John Dewey observed: “Collateral learning in the way of formation of enduring attitudes…is more important [than stand-alone lessons].” Research shows that one-off ‘silver bullet’ implementations are not effective. They tend to rely on individuals and so do not sustain over time. eSmart has this holistic philosophy embedded in its framework for whole-school change strategies to reduce bullying and cyberbullying and to promote cybersafety.
