A government report to be released next week will recommend children under the age of two not watch any television and children from two to five years of age be limited to one hour of television a day.
“Based on recent research, it is recommended that children younger than two years of age should not spend any time watching television or using other electronic media” a draft copy of the report states.
One of the authors of the report, Dr Jo Salmon from Deakin University, highlighted that there is no reason for young children to watch television. “There isn’t any evidence of these educational claims from videos and computer games that these are beneficial to children’s mental health and development,” she said.
A draft of the report titled “Get up and Grow” was obtained by the Australian today. The report is currently being finalised by the Federal Government and will be released next week.
