It is one of the country’s most celebrated institutions and has often been at the centre of controversy, but now the Miss Italia beauty contest is raising eyebrows again by banning bikinis in favour of modest attire.
Only black and white one-piece bathing suits will be allowed in the swimwear section of next month’s contest in an attempt to recreate the more restrained style of the post-war era. Tattoos and body piercings will also be banned, as will any contestants who have had cosmetic surgery.
It would be even better if they went one step further and eliminated the swim wear category altogether.
I agree that the swim wear category should be banned as it portrays the wrong image for both young females and males. the body image that the Miss Universe portrays only increase the potenital of young females who then have to face socieites judgement to determine if they are “beautiful.” It also portrays the word beauty in a superficial sense to young males who comments are influencial to certain extent on the opposite gender. The organisers of beauty contests should review their criteria in what they determine as beauty….
