Greetings from 2040! You probably won’t recognise how schools function these days. By the end of 2024 we realised we had to redesign schools to meet the needs of a new generation of young people. The warning signs for us by 2024 included 20% of students not completing schooling, 33% not meeting literacy and numeracy baselines, a big disparity between our highest and lowest functioning schools as well as an exhausted workforce of educators.

Our aims were to have students excited about learning and for teaching to be a highly desired profession.

Knowing the future wellbeing of our country depended on the success of our young people, we appointed a Chief Education Officer and set about revitalising the national curriculum. The investment in a national AI infrastructure was a breakthrough point.

This progressively freed teachers from the drudgery of administrative tasks and freed them to plan, curate and implement exciting learning experiences.

In return for taxpayer support, all schools were required to contribute to a national data bank of exemplary lessons. These were available to all schools, and using our upgraded national broadband system were especially utilised by schools in remote and regional areas.

All teachers received specialist training in the neuroscience of learning and AI and also
how to apply these advances to benefit neurodiverse students. All school leaders were trained on how to create cultures in schools that excited people about being there.

Giving teachers additional time to design learning and ensuring equitable working conditions with other professions increased vitality and creativity in our schools.
