The Highfields Rugby League Club in Queensland has come under fire for running a fundraising evening with the theme of “Porn and Prawn”. The event, held at Cabarlah Community Hall, included strippers, prostitutes and alcohol.
The Queensland Rugby League is furious that the event was allowed to happen and have asked the club to explain their actions. It is yet another case of the game being linked to sex and alcohol scandals.
Queensland Rugby League south-west regional coordinator Shane McNally said he was disappointed the event occurred.
Mr McNally said “Their conduct over the weekend certainly has not helped the image of the game, it’s definitely a setback,” he added.
However, the inappropriateness of the fundraising event seemed to be lost on the Highfields Rugby League president Bob Pearce who dismissed the event as a “bit of fun”.
“It is just a fundraising event for God’s sake,” Mr Pearce said. Clearly he is not aware of what sort of negative role model this provides for young people.
Local resident Ms Morley said “It was an absolute disgrace what was going on in that hall. It was a brothel and nothing less.”
The community hall, on Toowoomba Regional Council land, is operated by the Geham Sports and Festival Committee.
“The screams and howls from the men inside made me ashamed to be human,” Ms Morley said.
She concluded “Is there some code of conduct that prevents this sickening crap being classed as entertainment for fundraising purposes?

What a load of political correctness gone astray; for goodness sake. It was advertised as ‘Porn and Prawns’, it is a bit obvious what was going on, off, up or down. Did anyone ask the entertainers about the night? It sounds like the only women who were there, were in a professional capacity. It sounds like a fun night was had. People socialised, not one got hurt and no one was degraded.
Is it any wonder that the NRL has serious ongoing issues with players behaving badly with alcohol & in their attitude / treatment of women, given the attitude of the organisers of this “fund raising event” & that of the comment made by Paul above.
