The Australian Council on Children (ACCM) and the Media and the Children and Families Research Centre, Macquarie University are holding a one day seminar on Tuesday 1 March 2011 at:
NSW Teachers Federation Conference Centre
37 Reservoir Street
Surry Hills, NSW 2010

Chaired by Professor Alan Hayes Director of the Australian Institute of Family Studies, the seminar will include discussions on:

Who should attend?
This conference is relevant to researchers, teachers, regulators, politicians, educators, child health professionals, social workers, counsellors or representatives of children’s organisations.

The history of media violence research has been full of controversy. Is the jury still out, or have we been ignoring evidence of damaging mental and physical impacts of scary and violent media on children and young people?

Can our regulatory/ classification systems become more effective in protecting children and in supporting parents?

Leading researchers will review the research evidence in these fields, the present structure of classification and ratings systems, and discuss recommendations for change.

Speakers include:

  • John P Murray
  • Doug Gentile and Ed Donnerstein from the US
