Does my bum look big in this ad?, published by Wombat Books,

This book is great for teenagers and a fabulous resource for teachers, parents and carers. It looks at the issues of body image and the media from a teenage friendly perspective. It is written in easy language that young people can understand with examples they can relate to.

Author, Lisa Cox, takes a behind the scenes look at the media industry to show teenagers how to critically and independently evaluate what they see, hear or read in popular culture and the media.

It is aimed at empowering young people to make their own informed choices about how they look and how they can feel comfortable and confident about who they are.

Childhood Psychologist Renee Kelly said the book is a “realistic look at an unrealistic world. Educating youth on these matters can only lead to improved self-esteem in adulthood.”

Cox tackles issues such as body image, popular culture, the media and how teenagers can feel good about themselves.

She points out that “advertising can be helpful but it can also be harmful by affecting the way you feel about yourself…  It seems that we’ve become so obsessed with physical appearances, that we’ve come to associate them with greatness.”
