Detailing some of the key points from the book What Every Autistic Girl Wishes Her Parents Knew, this article covers some of the challenges most commonly experienced by girls with autism and how parental support can help them to meet these challenges. The advice is collated from members of the Autism Women’s Network, who relate the difficulties they experienced growing up and how they wish they had been supported.

Many of the points, such as belief in and love for children, are universal needs that nevertheless need tailoring to girls with autism. Other issues, such as coaching in social skills, require a completely new approach to that usually taken when supporting child development. Although the challenges aren’t understated, the article is still overwhelmingly positive, the final point being putting girls in touch with role models who have already succeeded in building fulfilling lives with autism.
